Is it wrong for a Christian to have, for example, a statue of Buddha?

Hi Oda

Thanks for your question. Let's take a look at this topic.

The Bible is clear that we shouldn't have idols of any kind. The idols are not only referring to actual statues that would be worshipped, but anything we put before God. Idols can be a person, a material thing, a bank account, etc.

"We know also that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true. And we are in him who is true—even in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Dear children, keep yourselves from idols." I John 5:20-21

In this case, we are discussing a statue of Buddha in the home of a Christian. Although the Christian may not actually worship the Buddha statue, would it still be appropriate? This is when we must consider other ramifications and look to Scripture for answers.

What does the statue represent? (a false religion) What do guests in my home assume is true about me? (whether we like it or not, people will make assumptions about what you believe and who you are by what is in your home) Does the statue of a false god that is prominent in our culture glorify Jesus Christ in the home of one of his followers?

Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers. I Timothy 4:16

Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. I Peter 2:12

Test everything. Hold on to the good. Avoid every kind of evil.
I Thessalonians 5:21-22

In short, it's wise to not have a statue of Buddha. Even if it's for decorative purposes, what message would you want to send?

Thanks again for a great question.

Pastor Jeff
